Hotel Points Sweet Spots

The highest-value hotel redemptions by program — including tier-by-tier award charts, standout properties, and the perks that can dramatically change the math.

How to read this guide

CPP = cents per point

Divide the cash rate by the points cost and multiply by 100. A $350 room for 20,000 Hyatt points = 1.75¢/pt. Each program has a benchmark — exceeding it means you're getting above-average value.

CPP benchmarks aren't guarantees

The benchmarks show what points are typically worth across all redemptions. A good redemption is one that beats the benchmark. A great one beats it by 50%+.

Hidden perks change the math

Hilton waives resort fees on points stays. IHG offers a 4th Night Free. Hyatt's 5th Night Free is built into all standard awards. These perks can boost your effective CPP significantly.

Hyatt

World of Hyatt

Benchmark: 1.7¢/pt

Hyatt uses a fixed award chart (Cat 1–8). Award pricing does not change by date — you pay the same points whether it's a holiday weekend or a Tuesday in January. This predictability makes Hyatt the gold standard for hotel redemptions.

Marriott uses fully dynamic pricing. Award costs vary by date and property — the same room can be 25,000 pts on a Tuesday and 70,000 pts on New Year's Eve. Off-peak dates offer the best value. Free Night Certificates (35k, 50k, 85k) are often the best redemption vehicle.

  • Free Night Certificates (35k, 50k, 85k) from co-branded cards — versatile and transferable
  • Dynamic pricing means off-peak dates can offer under-0.5¢ or over-1.2¢ CPP — shop around
  • Airline mile transfer at 3:1 ratio (60k Bonvoy → 20k airline miles) — generally a poor deal
  • Transfers 1:1 from Chase UR and Amex MR to Marriott Bonvoy

Hilton

Hilton Honors

Benchmark: 0.5¢/pt

Hilton is fully dynamic. Points costs can be extremely high at premium properties, but the program has one massive hidden perk: resort fees and amenity fees are waived on points stays at most properties. Factor this into your cash comparison — a $350/night rate with a $50 resort fee is really $400 in cash.

IHG One Rewards

Benchmark: 0.61¢/pt

IHG uses dynamic pricing but operates in a lower points-per-night range than Hilton. The standout benefit is the 4th Night Free with the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card, effectively boosting your CPP by 33% on 4-night stays. IHG also owns luxury brands (Six Senses, Regent, InterContinental) that are often overlooked.

Hotel redemption golden rules

  • Hyatt is the best hotel transfer partner for most people. Fixed award chart, 5th night free, and strong luxury brand lineup. If you have Chase UR or Bilt Points, Hyatt is the first hotel program to build.
  • Factor in resort fees when comparing cash vs. points. Hilton waives resort fees on points stays. A 'cheap' $250 cash rate with a $60 resort fee is actually $310 — that changes your CPP calculation dramatically.
  • The 5th Night Free can change a mediocre deal into a great one. On a 5-night Hyatt stay, you only pay 4 nights of points. If the per-night value is 1.5¢, that 20% boost makes it effectively 1.8¢ — above benchmark.
  • Dynamic pricing means dates matter enormously for Marriott and Hilton. A Marriott property might be 25,000 pts in January and 80,000 pts on Memorial Day weekend. Always check multiple dates before evaluating a deal.
  • Don't transfer credit card points to hotel programs speculatively. Hotel points devalue faster than airline miles. Only transfer when you have a specific redemption in mind within the next few months.
